Line Variation: Dynamic Drawings with Varying Line Thicknesses
Line Variation: Drawing #13 – “Dynamic Shoe”
In this exercise, we will focus on exploring line variation to add depth and liveliness to our drawings. By using a brush and ink, we can achieve highly varied lines with ease. This approach allows the drawing to appear more dynamic and engaging. As we progress, we will also delve into how different line thicknesses can convey a sense of “weight” in a drawing. For now, trust your intuition and experiment with varying the thickness of your lines. Before starting the shoe drawing, take some time to fill a page with a diverse range of squiggly lines, getting acquainted with your brush and its response to different pressures. Once you feel comfortable, proceed with drawing your shoe. Although you may feel a bit hesitant at first, embrace the challenge and let your creativity flow.
Because ink is permanent and doesn’t allow for erasing, it demands greater concentration and focus. Embrace this challenge as an opportunity to strengthen your skills. Don’t be discouraged by mistakes in your lines. Remember, the key is to prioritize practice over achieving a perfect final drawing. Begin by dedicating 5 minutes to filling a page with a multitude of squiggly lines, ensuring a high degree of variation. Then, spend at least an hour working on two shoe drawings, allowing yourself to explore different techniques and approaches.
Sketchbook: Drawing #14 “Line Variation Braids”
In this drawing exercise, let your imagination take the lead. Your goal is to create an abstract drawing with form using only lines and your brush. The structure of the drawing is straightforward: the lines should converge at specific points, with thicker lines representing areas where the lines come together. Feel free to experiment and shape the lines in any way you desire, focusing on exploring various line thicknesses and their effects on the overall composition. Embrace the freedom to express your creativity and enjoy the process of playing with different line variations.
