Your Guide to Studying Painting in Prague, Czech Republic

Are you passionate about painting and have you always wanted to study in the heart of Europe? Oko Academy in Prague, Czech Republic, provides a dynamic and inspiring environment tailored directly to your needs. You can choose either from a longer course, with a guided focus, or pop into just a few lessons to see if we’re the right fit. You can take painting and drawing classes at your own pace, and we cater both to seasoned artists as well as those just getting started. Oko Academy stands out for its small and cozy class sizes, and we offer a specialized focus on painting.

Here’s what sets us apart:

  • Dedicated Painting Program:
  • At Oko Academy, painting isn’t just a course; it’s a specialized program designed to nurture your artistic talent. I will work directly with students to ascertain your artistic goals, and help make them a reality.
  • Located right near the heart of Prague:
  • Our painting studio is located just a couple tram stops from the center of Prague, and is nestled within the legendary and vibrant neighborhood of Zizkov which has a very vibrant nightlife as well as many cultural and artistic opportunities.

2. Painting Curriculum

Our carefully crafted painting curriculum ensures a well-rounded education in painting that doesn’t discount the masters, but also allows for innovation and experimentation:

  • Fundamentals of Painting:
  • Master the basics of painting, including color theory, composition, and various techniques essential for every aspiring artist.
  • Advanced Painting Techniques:
  • Elevate your skills with advanced techniques, encouraging you to explore a more expressive style as well as an individualized creative voice.
  • Art History Integration:
  • Gain a deep understanding of the historical context of painting, providing a solid foundation for your artistic journey. I’m a big Art History nerd so I will be giving a lot of suggestions of artists to check out, as well as accompany you to various openings and cultural events related to painting in Prague.

3. Admissions at Oko Academy

Joining Oko Academy is a straightforward process:

  • There is no need for a Portfolio Submission: Anyone, regardless of their abilities is welcome to study.
  • If you’re in Prague, Book a class now by navigating to the “Book a class” page. Select a time and subject which works best for you.
  • Email chat:
  • After you’ve found a class that works best for you, and signed up, I’ll follow up with an email.

4. Language-Friendly Environment

Our courses are conducted in English, ensuring international students feel at home. While a basic understanding of Czech can enhance your time in Prague, it’s not a prerequisite for joining Oko Academy. I have a “good” grasp of conversational czech (My wife is Czech and we only speak it at home) and am happy to accomodate students who also wish to communicate in Czech.

5. Oko Academy Community and Opportunities

  • Networking Events: In addition to the painting and drawing courses, we also have a gallery opening at our space every week for the “First Thursdays” exhibition in Prague. A new international artist is highlighted every month.
  • Borivojova is the block down from us and is one of the most important for Prague’s art scene. Here you will find a handful of galleries hosting openings in a variety of media, including painting.

6. Affordable Living in Prague

Prague is known for its affordable cost of living, making it an ideal destination for students. However it has become more expensive in years to come. If you are traveling from abroad for one of our longer painting course intensives, I would advise to check the prices on Airbnb. I’m happy to help with questions regarding where to stay and what is affordable. The school itself can not place you in accomodation.

Conclusion

Studying painting at Oko Academy is a great way to experience a new culture, and really dig into your painting practice. I’ve got a lot of experience working with students in a variety of media but my heart is really bound to painting. I look forward to meeting you and hope that you also find a place here in Prague that helps shape your own artistic journey.
